Re-Authoring - With Subtitles (Redux)

This is the third thread I've started on this subject, but the
other two were five months ago and I guess I'm trolling for
something new in the software department.

The rip in question can be played with VLC Media Player and when
VLC Media Player | Video | Subtitles Track is changed from
"Disable" to "Track 1 [English]" it plays just fine and shows the
desired subtitles.

The requirement is to convert that rip - which is a DVD-Formatted
movie - to .mpg, .avi, or .wmv and show subtitles in the
converted file.

Unencumbered by any knowledge, I see this as pretty
straightforward.

OTOH, I have VideoRedoTvSuite which has about a bazillion options
and settings and it cannot do this. OTOOH, I find it to be
somewhat buggy....

So.... For one who knows nothing, is there any sort of utility
that can "Play" a DVD-formatted movie into a .MPG or other stream
and get the subtitles?

FWIW, in one of the other threads, there was reference to
"virtualdubmod", but as far as I could make out, they were
talking about first having the subtitles available in text
files.... What I'm grasping for is pulling it all from the
DVD...just pretending that the DVD's "Subtitles" setting is
turned on.

I *think* I've answered my own question: an app called
"HandBrake".

"HandBrake has two methods of subtitle OUTPUT:
Hard Burn: This means the subtitles are written on top of the
image permanently. They cannot be turned on or off like on the
DVD.

Soft Subtitles: This means the subtitles will appear as separate
selectable tracks in your output file. With the correct playback
software, you’ll be able to enable / disable these subtitles as
required."

Confirmed. HandBrake v.9 does the job.
