Why does a DVD freeze & skip?

My boyfriend backs up my DVD collection & stores the originals in a safe place.
He thinks he's doing me a service.
The problem is that a third of his DVDs skip & freeze all over.
What makes that happen?
What can I tell him to fix?
He says he makes all the DVDs the same way so it must be the original.
But I know the original works just fine.
Please help me help him back up my DVDs properly so they don't skip & jerk.

I agree with Duncan. He should try other/better media. He can check
around at www.videohelp.com to see what is working well for others. If
none of that helps, you might have to upgrade the boyfriend. ;)

Some DVD players don't like certain brands of DVD disks.
If you are using a cheap brand of DVD disks then you might be getting
bad sectors this would cause the DVD to freeze if it can't read a
certain part of the DVD.
Try a different brand of DVD or check the DVD on a different brand of
DVD player as your DVD player might be limited to playing only certain
brands of DVD's.

OK folks...I have a very similar problem and am wondering if you think this
too is the media. A friend is backing up DVDs using DVD Xcopy...(I also use
Xcopy and it works flawlessly...he has the exact same version as I do).
Anyhow...his copied discs play perfectly for about 80% of the movie...then
the stuttering freezing problem rears its ugly head. He has used el-cheapo
blanks and TDK blanks. He has 3 DVD players and they all have the playback
problem...I put one of his discs in my toshiba laptop and it freezes when
playing the later chapters...click back to an earlier chapter and it plays
fine. I put a couple of my copies in his players and they play
perfectly....so it is not that his players don't like copied dvds.

We put a different burner in his computer...same problem with the finished
product

Put his burner in my computer...no problem with finished product

About the only thing we have not tried is using his media in my burner...I
guess that is worth a shot..

Any pointers much appreciated

If you are using XCopy and borderline media, it is likely XCopy.

I had problems with XCopy and dropped it. Have used DVD Shrink and same type
media since and no problems.

I agree, I use 'cheap' 4x princo dvds all the time with no problems. DVD
Shrink is great for quick copy jobs. If you still have problems try another
player.
