Discussion:
PowerDVD v 5 suddenly plays DVDs jerky (about 1 frame per 2 seconds)

Hi. I have PowerDVD v5. (It was an upgrade from an OEM v 3.)

(I'm running Windows 2000 Pro on an Athlon 1.4GHz CPU with 1 G RAM; the video
card is an ATI Radeon 9800.)

Until a few days ago, it played DVDs perfectly.

Now suddenly it's gone broken; it plays DVDs extremely jerkily now, showing only
about 1 frame every 2 seconds. (They're not consecutive frames. Rather, the
movie seems to progress properly in time. It's just that PowerDVD shows a frame
for 2 seconds, then the frame that occurs 2 seconds later for 2 seconds, then
the frame that occurs 2 seconds after that for 2 seconds, and so on. IN other
words, I could still watch a 110 minute movie in 110 minutes, except that it
would be a silly viewing experience :-) It's like posterized time, is what it
is.)

This problem occurs both when playing actual DVD disks, and when playing DVD
files I have on my hard drive. Also, it occurs no matter which of my 2 DVD
drives I put the disk in: an AOpen DVD-1640 reader drive, and a Plextor PX-708A
DVD burner.

Just to be thorough, in case any of these changes may have something to do with
the problem: I *have* installed some software recently: CoolEdit 2000 and Total
Recorder v 3.2. Also, I recently installed the Plextor DVD burner, although I'm
not sure if that installation delineates PowerDVD's playback going from just
fine to being useless.

Also, I've run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and all its tests work fine. (It's
reporting I have DirectX version 9.)

Also, the problem occurs whether I have hardware acceleration turned on in
PowerDVD or turned off.

I hope I've given enough information for someone to offer some clue as to why my
PowerDVD suddenly went from perfect to worthless? Thanks.

-- Steve

Cause PDVD5 sucks. Don't know why, it just does. Power DVD 4 XP works
great however.

When 5 first came out, I got it, installed it, messed with it for a long
time and I could never get it to work as good as v4, so I dumped it and
stayed with 4.

FWIW I also agree with the pdvd5 sucking. I experienced the same thing and
couldn't figure it out until I uninstalled it and put 4 back in. Now it's ok
again. Oh yeah, btw, reinstalling 5 doesn't help either. Just toss it on the
shelf for now or give it to somebody you dislike.

First guess would be Total Recorder is causing the problem. Since it
wedges into the audio driver it might be interfering. Try deleting it.

Second guess would be that the Plextor drive might be misconfigured in
terms of DMA. If it is on the same IDE chain as the AOpen drive this
might cause problems. I rate this has unlikely, but again, to trouble-
shoot you might try de-cabling the IDE cable from the Plextor drive and
see if the original AOpen drive now works correctly.

Matthew,

Yup, that was it: Total Recorder. I didn't have to uninstall it, though. I
simply changed my sound settings in Control Panel back to my regular sound card.
Once I did that, PowerDVD plays flawlessly once again. If and when I need to
use Total Recorder again -- which is not a very frequent occasion, but it does
happen now and then -- then I can simply switch my Preferred Device (under the
"audio" tab under "Sound and Multimedia Properties" in Control Panel) back to
Total Recorder. It would be a minor hassle, but a *very* minor one.

Thanks again for the pointer. I appreciate it.
