Discussion:
Relaibly convert MOV to MPG or AVI?

Can anyone recommend a robust, preferably free method of converting
the MOV files I sometimes get from a friend's digicam to a widely
usable format please?

I am currently having *some* success with the conversion software
SUPER from eRight at http://www.erightsoft.net/SupCk2.html
But sometimes the result fails to allow the audio track to be played.
And I'm out of my depth with many of the options in SUPER anyway. Such
as whether or not to enable 'MEncoder' or 'ffmpeg', and whether to
leave the audio output set to MP2 (default) or MP3. So if there's a
simpler, no-brainer method of getting MOV to MPEG2 or AVI then I'm
keen to try it please.

Terry, many flavors of MOV exist. Without knowing exactly which
one your friend's digicam uses, no one here can tell you whether any
given conversion utility is going to work reliably.

Your best option is:

a) keep experimenting with different software,

b) talk your friend into buying a new digicam (one that doesn't use a
sucky proprietary/closed format), or

c) buy the full QT package ($30) and use its conversion function to
convert to MPEG-4.

MPEG-4 (like MOV) has many flavors, and codecs are far from
standardized among PC platforms. Option b) is by far the easiest.

I believe "MOV" is a container file like "AVI". You need to know
what codec was used to encode the contents, etc. Does Gspot
handle MOV as well as AVI? I don't have any files at hand to
try it myself.

Note that "MOV" *IS* a "widely usable format" in Mac circles. :-)
And many (most?) PCs can play it, also, with the installation of
(free) Quicktime player or equivalent.

Have you tried "Rad Tools", it has a "Convert a file" button
that you can use to convert a .mov file to an .avi file. The "Bink
Converter" that the button brings you to offers plenty of control
over the process, if you end up needing to adjust the video to
adapt the video from that provided by your friend's camcorder.
