Post by (PeteCresswell)When I play a DVD or view a movie online via NetFlix, at some
point in the chain of events there's got tb an unencrypted stream
of bits that drives the monitor that I am viewing on. Ditto the
speakers.
Seems like some combination of hardware and software sb able to
capture those streams and write a .MPG file from them.
Right now, I'm thinking subtitles: insert the DVD, navigate to
the menu, set subtitles On/English, proceed to play the DVD, and
capture the screen and audio - as an alternative to ripping.
Possible? Or am I just wishing?
Possible but not very practical. I've tried it with Desktop capturing or
window capturing software and pretty much failed miserably. You will not be
happy with the results.
What you're looking to do is akin to "frame buffer grabbing" or taking
screenshots. You'd have to do it at the current frame rate... say 29.97
frames per second. If you want the end results to be an MPEG video, you'd
have to store enough frames to encode into Iframes, Bframes, Pframes and do
the gops and all the other needed data that makes an mpeg and mpeg.
Uncompressed video would be easier but takes up a ton of space.
There are utilities that do this sort of thing but as you can see by just
looking around, nobody uses this method. That in itself tells you
something.
(but I do like the way your thinking. Ingenuity. When I first did 5 1/2 disk
copying protection removal I went the same route... "how come I can load
this thing and it plays but I can't get a copy? If I can load it to memory
and it obviously works, why I can't I redirect it to load on another disk
instead?")
p.s.
I can't speak about Netflix, don't use it. I can say with DVD I haven't
looked in quite awhile but there just wasn't anything available when I
tried to go this route. I gave up when I realized it's totally pointless,
you will not end up with a true copy no matter what you may find and use,
it will be a re-encoded copy of buffer data and there are much easier
methods that give much better results.
btw... I'm pretty tenacious if I really want something. I told my son "I'll
point a damn camera at the screen if I have to!! Copy protect my
eyeballs!!"
Sad thing is, it's probably coming. A chip implant in your brain will shut
down your vision if you don't have permission to view the material.
