Discussion:
Does an intelligent installer exist somewhere for MS Movie Maker?

I simply wanted to edit out a section of an AVI movie,
so I googled for the top-ten Windows 7 freeware movie
makers, one of which consistently on the list being
Microsoft Windows Movie Maker.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker

My first problem was there is no offline downloader
that I can find for *just* the Movie Maker program!

The second problem is that the needless bloat that comes
with Movie Maker is absolutely horrific.

My third problem is that I never install into C:\anything
yet, the program insists on creating a C:\Program Files
hierarchy (with all sorts of crud in it).

So, I guess my question is a combination of those:

Q: Is there an offline installer for *just* Movie Maker
that is intelligently written?

Movie Maker is part of the Windows Live package. When the install
starts, you have the option of choosing which parts of the package you
want to install. If you can't live with that, you need to choose
another program.

I don't use it.

However, there IS A RECENT malware targeting XP users passing

Yep
"an intelligent installer for MS Movie Maker"

I downloaded it, and it scored 3 on Jotti.
BEWARE - It is apparently designed to destroy win XP installs.
Now who would that benefit ?

Hi, Eddie.

As you may know, there are multiple versions of Movie Maker. They have
different capabilities, but their names are confusingly similar. Typical
Microsoft! :>( At least two of the versions can be installed side by side
and both can run at the same time. I first did this in Win7 (or was it
Vista?) and can still do this in Win8.1 with Media Center. I'm strictly an
amateur at movie making, but have been able to cobble together some videos
and photos into a couple of short (20-minute) "movies" for our family.

First, of course, is the current "Windows Movie Maker; Version 2012 (Build
16.4.3508.0205)", which is part of the Windows Live Essentials that you
already know about and that can be downloaded free from:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/essentials (It is not
necessary to download the full WLE suite; we can pick and choose the
components that we want. But I have plenty of disk space so I installed
them all; I hate to hit a roadblock later and need to go back to download
something I've didn't know I would need.) I think individual component
installers are available, but I haven't used them.

But the current WMM will not do some things that the older version can (or
does them differently), such as video transitions, video effects and titles.
I still have WinXP SP3 installed on another drive and I can run the earlier
"Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4028.0". You might want to take a look at
this one, too.

On my computer they are installed at:
Win8: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\MovieMaker.exe
WinXP: Q:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe

I hope this helps, Eddie.

I had no idea there were different capabilities between
the two different Movie Makers - so I will start looking
for the WinXP version to install onto Windows 7.

Thanks!

Start with the SP3 redistributable, if you don't have a CD.

I managed to convince someone to do all the hard work here :-)
I wish there was an easy way to expand all the files on the CD,
so I could just grab the moviemk.inf and select "Install" and
see what happens :-)

One downside of the Microsoft tools, is the file formats supported
on output. There weren't a lot of useful choices.
